Hampstead police warn public about text scam claiming to be from the USPS that can drain bank accounts
The Hampstead, NH Police Department issued a warning about a scam that has been making the rounds. If you have received unsolicited mobile text messages with an unfamiliar or strange web link that indicates a USPS delivery requires a response from you, do not click on the link or use the associated QR code. The text message may indicate that you have a package that cannot be delivered due to incomplete address information and will ask you to reply to the text and follow more instructions.
This type of text message is a scam called smishing. Do not reply, click on any links or use any QR codes associated with these texts. Engaging with these links and codes can allow scammers to access personal and financial information.
For more information on smishing, including how to report these texts if you receive one, please visit the United States Postal Inspection Service.
